Background

Sweden has a relatively temperate climate because of the Gulf Stream. In the summer the average temperature in Stockholm averages 64°F (18°C) but in January temperatures average 27°F (-3°C). Snow stays on the ground for about one hundred days a year. The only place that has a harsh, bitter cold winter in Sweden is the northern part of the country located in the Arctic Circle. For this reason more than 80% of the population lives in the southern third of the country.

Many rivers flow from the mountains through the forests and into the Baltic Sea. Sweden is filled with lakes and rivers providing plenty of water for the country. More than half of Sweden's the land is forested. Rivers in the northern 2/3 of the country known as the Norrland region provide most of the hydroelectric power which the country heavily relies on.
